What type of deck materials do you build with?

The most popular material used in our construction is a “composite” or PVC deck board. These are low maintenance board selections in that they require little in terms of traditional care (ie. sanding and staining). Following these selections in popularity are pressure treated wood and cedar wood.  These generally require more maintenance but offer an excellent value.  FSBD is also experienced in working with exotic lumbers. We have built decks using Cumaru, Jatoba, Tigerwood, and IPE. We recently completed our largest project to date using 2,800sqft of IPE.

What type of railings do you use?

We use a variety of railings to suit the needs of each customer. Deck railings give each deck a different design aesthetic. We offer the following rail systems.

  • Composite railings: Choose from (4) different profiles in (6) different colors.
  • Aluminum rail systems: A large selection of baluster (spindle) designs.
  • Cable Rail systems.
  • Glass panel systems.
  • Vinyl railings: Choose from (3) different profiles in (3) different colors (Khaki, tan, white)

Will you help with the design of the project?

We understand that not everyone can visualize a project before it starts to take shape. On our initial visit, we are able to provide hand drawn sketches to provide you with a rough 2-D look at the layout, foot print and to insure our dimensions are correct. At that time we also will recommend alternate design options that may be incorporated into your project. Afterwhich, FSBD will produce a 3-D rendering to help you visualize the final product. This often helps our clients see how the deck will complement your existing home.

Do I need a permit for my project?

Yes! All new deck builds or tear down and re-builds will require a building permit. We will handle the permit process for you. FSBD will prepare and submit the structural drawings that your township will require for the building permit. The only thing we will require from you is the survey (plot plan) of your property, which is required for the zoning portion of the permit. If you have an HOA that requires approval before construction, we will also provide you with all of the necessary drawings and 3-D renderings, along with a list of materials and colors to be used on your project for you to submit your request. This usually speeds up your HOA approval process. We typically do NOT get involved directly with HOA associations.

Who will be my point of contact when our project build begins?

At First State Building you will always work directly with the estimator that you encountered at your initial consultation. We believe that our professionals should take ownership of a project from beginning to end.  We also believe that this helps eliminate confusion and miscommunications that can often sour a construction project. All of our estimators have construction experience (actually building decks in the field!) at one point in their career and understand the building principles and required to successfully complete each project. They will be on site each day to answer questions and address any concerns you may have throughout the construction process.
