Being The Spookiest House on Your Block (Halloween Special)

Happy Halloween, ghouls and goblins! We can’t believe it is already the spookiest month of the year, but we are so excited to get creepy. When I was a kid, there was one house on the block that always went all out for Halloween, and that neighbor’s house was always the first stop for trick or treating. As an adult now, I aspire to be the coolest house on the street, to bring the same joy to kids that this house did for me. To help you be the spookiest house in your neighborhood, here is my list of Halloween must haves to seriously elevate your trick or treat game.

Go All Out with Decor
Step up your scare factor with some spooky decorations. Ghosts, pumpkins, bats, the whole creepy crew. Let your imagination go crazy; this is the time to get creative. Tip: to create a spooky and cohesive ambience, think outside the Halloween coffin, I mean ‘box’. Using household items, like old books, candlesticks, dark vases filled with dead flowers, and antiques, pull the whole look together.
Treats For Later, Sweets For Now
The coolest thing our neighbor used to do was give out Halloween inspired treats to eat and drink while we went trick or treating. They would set up a table at the end of their driveway with hot apple cider, cookies, and cupcakes to serve to the children and their parents to enjoy while they walked around. This is such a highlight of Halloween, and gave the adults a chance to participate in the trick or treating.
Don’t Skimp on Candy
I know it’s easy to just buy the cheapest bag of tootsie rolls at the store, but instead, purchase the candy you would want to eat. The bag will probably only cost a couple dollars more. No one wants to end up with a whole basket of filler candy, not even kids who live for sugar. Think of your favorite candies and buy those; chances are, you’ll have some left over for you to enjoy!
Make It an Experience!
If you’re ready to go all out on Halloween, this idea is for you. Our neighbor would transform their garage into a ‘haunted walk through’ every year, and it was epic. They would set up spooky scenes in their garage with props, covering the unused space with black sheets to create a dark and eerie feel. Black lights and string lights were set up to illuminate their scenes, which added to the ambience. This is such a cool idea if you have some extra time on your hands and want to elevate your spookiness.

We hope these ideas give you some inspiration for your own Halloween display this year. If you use any of these tips, make sure to send us your pictures and/or tag us in your post! We would love to see what you come up with. As always, if your home is frightfully unappealing even without decorations, FSBD offers custom porch and deck builds, as well as hardscaping, creative masonry, outdoor entertainment features, like fireplaces and outdoor kitchens, and so much more.
